Project “Erasmus Gap – Exploring the Gap between Mobile Students and the Total Student Population in Higher Education Institutions”
The project aims to draw attention to the existing gap between students who have real opportunities to participate in mobility programmes and those who do not. Erasmus Gap approaches this issue from a European perspective, addressing a topic that is largely dealt with at national or even institutional level.
The Erasmus Gap project intends to document the significant gap between students who choose to participate in mobility during their studies and those who do not due to socio-economic reasons.
The visualization of large-scale datasets that the project will collect from different European countries will help higher education institutions and national agencies develop their own tools to fully understand the importance of this gap and its negative impact on social inclusion. Data from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv will further highlight the importance of taking into account the specific needs of Ukrainian students during wartime, particularly in the context of the EU’s ambitions for greater European integration and cohesion.
Policy recommendations based on a highly reliable dataset will be developed to present clear evidence of the current state of inclusive participation in mobility and how it can be reliably monitored in the future. These recommendations will also consider the potential benefits of making such monitoring a regular part of strategic planning and monitoring of Erasmus programme implementation. They will take into account known links with funding parameters that could help reduce socio-economic disparities among mobile students.
Thus, the Erasmus Gap project will provide data and tools that can play a key role in medium-term and longer-term policy debates concerning the level of funding for the Erasmus+ programme, particularly in relation to such vital issues as greater European inclusion and cohesion.

Objective:
The Erasmus Gap project aims to draw attention to the existing gap between students who have real opportunities to participate in mobility programmes and those who do not. The project takes a European perspective on an issue that is generally addressed at national or institutional level. The project activities have been designed to develop and implement a set of policy recommendations outlining the changes needed to reduce the gap between students participating in Erasmus programmes and the overall student population.
Results:
The project will provide practices and experiences from several European countries to document the existing gap between students who have real opportunities to participate in mobility programmes and those who do not. Data visualization and relevant training will provide higher education institutions with methods for documenting the gap and developing strategies to reduce it. Evidence-based policy recommendations will target decision-makers and help them implement a more inclusive mobility programme.
